FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: What are the prices for you work? A: I hate to say it, but, it's hard to give a generic answer to this question. The best anology I've heard is; "it's kind of like asking, how long is a piece of string." However, I know that's not what you want to hear. For rough guessing figure about $175/sq. inch for extreme detail. That would be like recreating a photograph with matched colors and engraving. For something more basic: approx. $20 per piece of inlay. Pricing is influenced by myriad factors: Size of pieces, number of pieces, type of material, type of cut, color matching, difficulty of engraving... I need a lot of detail from you about what you want. It's best to sketch up a crayon drawing of what you have in mind, with basic measurements, what kind of materials/colors and a description of what level of detail you want. Also take a look at this page if you haven't yet - It goes over how I go through the process of creating a piece with my clients. If you would like a more accurate estimate or quote please get in touch with me with a more detailed description.
Q: Can you do inlay on a finished guitar or furniture that I have? A:Yes, the finish on your guitar (or whatever it is) can be easily removed where the inlay will be, and then repaired to it's original state after the inlay is finished. For fine instruments I outsource this to luthier Peter Barberio.
Q: Do the frets on my guitar have to be removed before you do the inlay? A: Well, not necessarily. The frets can stay in place if it's an inlay design that won't pass underneath the frets (i.e. replacing round fret markers with birds). However, if you want something like a vine all the way up the fingerboard, then the frets will need to be pulled and replaced. So, wait until your frets wear out. As they are being replaced is a good time to add some inlay.
